Free, As In Speech

From Oliver Kamm's "The Tyranny of Moderation: Respect and Civility are the Enemies of Free Speech":

The notion that free speech, while important, needs to be held in balance with the avoidance of offence is question-begging, because it assumes that offence is something to be avoided. Free speech does indeed cause hurt – but there is nothing wrong in this. Knowledge advances through the destruction of bad ideas. Mockery and derision are among the most powerful tools in that process...

It is inevitable that those who find their deepest convictions mocked will be offended, and it is possible (though not mandatory, and is incidentally not felt by me) to extend sympathy and compassion to them...

The debate has not been aided – it has indeed been severely clouded – by an imprecise use of the term ‘respect’. If this is merely a metaphor for the free exercise of religious and political liberty, then it is an unexceptionable principle, but also an unclear and redundant usage. Respect for ideas and those who hold them is a different matter altogether. Ideas have no claim on our respect; they earn respect to the extent that they are able to withstand criticism...

Beyond this is a pragmatic question. If those with deeply held convictions find they receive compensation for injured feelings, then mental hurt is what they will seek out. As one group succeeds, then others will perceive the incentive to fashion comparable demands...

You know it is a fucking shocker to have your belief system ripped from under your feet. I had it happen because of circumstances in my life. It is good and bad, it makes you question everything that comes after that, and your brain hurts coz you have to think. That old saying "ignorance is bliss" has its merits.

Honey, just keep taking the blue pill and you can believe whatever you want to believe.

eng, how come you are not over there in paifuckingcrazy land helping the hamasses throw people off of buildings?

Word has it they are hanging peaceniks off of bridges and lighting them on fire. You wouldn't want to miss that would you?

Gosh, elaine. I thought you wanted me to go with you on a different kind of date. I don't get off on murder, throwing people off buildings or setting people on fire.

Sorry, you'll have to find someone else to accompany you. I know you were really looking forward to killing peaceniks, but I thought you meant "killing" it in a figurative way, you know like shouting them down. I always enjoy watching that when it is done well, but actual murder and mayhem? No.

You have me all wrong eng. I am in to protecting peacniks, even if they are misguided weak fools. As stupid and useless as you are, I would protect you. It makes me feel better that you are too scared to go to the ME to demonstrate. You just stay home here and wave your terrorist flag and let the true and strong look after you. As long as you and your ilk are out at Victoria park waving your terrorist flags, I know Canada is still a democracy. I do wish the peaceniks would stay out of the ME though, so they don't put real men and women's lives in harm's way.

I don't want your "protection" elaine. Protect someone else in your torture chambers. I don't want your re-education camps either. But should you want to escape those yourself, I would help you.

I'm sorry that you refer to the Maple Leaf, you know, Canada's flag, as a "terrorist" flag. I don't have any other flags, so that must be the one you are referring to. Why do you consider Canada's flag to be a terrorist flag? I don't.

Break away from the tyrants that are controlling you. They can't kill us all you know.

Bullshit, I can smell a lefty terrorist supporting traitorous glowtardian from a 100 miles away. That is what you are eng. Everything you write points in that direction.

Elaine,

I'm really not kidding when I say that you are insane. You demonstrate signs of mental illness or mental disorder which refers to one of many mental health conditions characterized by distress, impaired cognitive functioning, atypical behavior, emotional dysregulation, and/or maladaptive behavior.

Good thing we have universal health care and you can go get checked out. I would strongly suggest it before you hurt yourself or others.

Peter of course the lefty terrorist supporting glowtardians would think I was crazy. They don't know what to do with people who state the obvious. You don't have to worry about me Peter, I am a very peaceable kinda person..... with an attitude. I deal in logic and consequence, it just seems to work for me. I know you couldn't grasp logic or conseqence, because it would rip your belief system from under you. I doubt serisouly if you have even had a thought that was not impregnated by some political correct nonsense. Go play with the other glowtardians, you sulk too much, and you can't keep up. Basically you are boring, and much too easy for me to squish under the heel of my man-made boot.

I don't think you are crazy, elaine. You project on to everyone you encounter in this place, but that does not make you crazy.

I deal in logic and consequence, it just seems to work for me. I know you couldn't grasp logic or conseqence, because it would rip your belief system from under you.

See what I mean? Projecting. Claiming your view is right simply because you say so. That is not very logical.

Go play with the other glowtardians, you sulk too much, and you can't keep up.

More projecting of course, and an inability to face any kind of disagreement. You either run away from debate or demand that people you disagree with you go away. Your insults are intended to make people either leave in disgust, or respond in anger. Neither is working with me, which explains your increasingly abusive attitude.

Basically you are boring, and much too easy for me to squish under the heel of my man-made boot.

A peacable kinda person eh? More projecting, and more inability to face actual discussion.

I rest my case.

I have to agree with eng here. To be honest I don't think elaine is crazy either. I didn't have the time or patience to develop a well articulated argument as eng has just done. well put.

Peter you and eng are one in the same...you are talking to yourself, and answering yourself....that is the first sign of a person not having both oars in the water.

Peter you better be careful, you made a poltically correct faux pas and I might have to report you to glowtardian central, better known as the London commons. You know very well you are not suppose to use words like crazy when you think someone is a nuts. I report you, and you will be screwed, chewed and tatotted by those politically correct whack jobs over at the London Commons. I want an apology or I am squealing to the feminazi's who rule the roost over there.
