Social pothole economy

William Watson on free market vs. publicly managed, union run economies in yesterday's Financial Post:

I heard a father on the radio yesterday saying daycare workers were worth a lot more than they're paid and he supported them 100 per cent. Here's a thought. If he really thinks that's true, why doesn't he give his child's daycare worker some money? He knows her personally. He thinks she does a great job. He believes she's underpaid. What's he waiting for?

Or is his support conditional? "I support them 100 per cent so long as someone else pays"? Or "100 per cent so long as I only pay a small part of the cost"?
