Gundon - 1970

London 150 years

August 1, 1970:

Downtown shoppers on a Saturday afternoon scatter from the intersection of Dundas and Wellington streets as a sniper using a high-powered rifle sprays bullets out of a room on the fifth floor of Hotel London. Police block off streets as people duck under vehicles and hide behind buildings. Norman Kernohan, 13, is shot in the thigh while sitting in a station wagon parked on Dundas Street, but he recovers later in hospital. By the time police capture the 22-year-old sniper in the hotel, he has fired about 40 rounds of ammunition into two police vehicles, three parked cars and four shops on Dundas Street. The sniper is convicted of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and sentenced to eight years in prison.
