Planet Earth? Baby, it's Google Earth now!

This is the coolest thing I've seen all year. Google Maps was just the beginning. Check out Google Earth — proof that Google is taking over the world. And that's alright with me… I never thought that as a geography student, I may end up working for Google someday!

Google Earth is essentially a free GIS (Geographic Information System) viewer that uses Google's internet search engine as an enormous and up-to-date geographic database. Google Earth uses sub-metre aerial and satellite imagery for visualization and supports flight simulation viewing over terrain and 3D views of both terrain and buildings. Additional Google Earth products will allow GIS users to store their own geographic information on Google servers and incorporate their own geodatabases with Google's.
