Painting their faces like barbarians

London 150 Years

April 19, 1921: Immoral fashion?

Londoners are asked if modern fashions worn by women in the downtown core are immodest and immoral, and if so, are they a menace to our national life. Those polled generally agree that some girls and women seen in the Richmond and Dundas area go to extremes in baring their knees and painting their faces like barbarians.
I wonder if her worship would have been considered a 'menace to our national life' back in 1921?
